Toyota has many reasons to celebrate this year.

In addition to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier this year, the automaker has now won the championship for another motorsport event – the World Rally Championship (WRC). Yes, Toyota has won the constructors’ title for the 2021 WRC season for the fifth time. Toyota drivers Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia won their eighth driver and co-driver title. They also did it in style, winning the final race of the event.

Toyota’s road to victory in the 2021 WRC has not been easy. The automaker and its drivers had to consistently finish top of the 12 rounds this season. Fortunately, Ogier and Ingrassia had already secured four victories before the last round – Monte Carlo, Croatia, Sardinia and Kenya. The two faced their teammates Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin in the final round, with Evans and Martin coming in second. As a result, Toyota managed to secure their fifth double of the season.

“Throughout the season there was always at least one of our crews on the podium, including Takamoto. Thanks to them, I was able to watch all the events with enthusiasm hoping that someone from our team would win, ”said Toyota President Akio Toyoda.

Toyota’s WRC victory in 2021 is the second since the team returned to sport in 2017 with the Yaris WRC. However, this will be the last time the automaker will field the Yaris rally car in the event. From the 2022 season, all WR competitors will switch to the new Rally1 cars with hybrid drive.

“Our Yaris WRCs are evolving in such an exciting situation at the highest level of competition. It was like a dream for us at Toyota. I would like to thank both crews from the bottom of my heart for making us feel this, ”added Toyoda.
